ANCHORAGE, Alaska — FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched the home of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens on Monday.

Investigative sources told FOX News that the FBI executed a search warrant at the Girdwood, Alaska, house. Sources would not detail what the search team is looking for, but said agents continued to do extensive work at the property late Monday.

The search began Monday afternoon when a number of federal agents were seen outside the home, the Anchorage Daily News reported. It wasn’t immediately clear if anything was taken from Stevens’ house.

Stevens, who was formerly chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, is the latest lawmaker reportedly under investigation for exchanging federal contracts for bribes, illegal gratuities and unreported gifts. The Stevens probe relates to dealings with VECO Corp., Alaska’s largest oil-field engineering firm. VECO has several federal contracts to provide logistics support for arctic research.

Stevens said that he will not comment on the investigation while it is ongoing, and does not want to create any appearance that he attempted to influence its outcome.

In a written statement, the seven-term senator said he knows Alaskans are interested in hearing from him, but “the interests of justice and our state are best served” if he withholds comment until after federal officials finish their investigation.

“I urge Alaskans not to form conclusions based upon incomplete and sometimes incorrect reports in the media. The legal process should be allowed to proceed so that all the facts can be established and the truth determined,” he said.

According to reports, in the last six years, Stevens has received more than $119,000, including $20,000 from VECO’s former CEO Bill Allen. Stevens and Allen also are longtime friends and partners in a race horse investment.

Is it me or is it the idea that the people placed in office are suppose to be the ones we look up to or hope won’t screw us over?
Maybe I’m naive or maybe I was just brought up right… but this isn’t what our Congress people are suppose ta be doing.
